WORST Decision to Leave.. Gale Force Winds and 800 Miles to go.

31. aug.. 2020
653 839 Ganger

#264 It's all sun and games on the coast. Sheltered coves, predictable winds, calm sleep. We had some really good times in the Portuguese summer, it's been great. But something makes us wanna go out into the big wild Atlantic, out of the protection and peace. Into the waves and open ocean. 800 miles and rough seas, and where are we ending up again? Still Portugal!?
Come see for yourself how we go.

  • Thanks for watching. Hope you're enjoying these new animations we've been working on lately. Stay tuned for part two of the crossing to Azores coming soon. Noticed a few questions in last weeks episode about Corona (beer). If anyone’s wondering about our collaboration with Corona you might have missed us talking about it in this episode: noworld.info/video/video/u3ydm6-lrsuarZo.html

  • Supposedly toddlers understand at 18 months old. You just have to remember most babies can’t retain the reasoning. You have to be consistent and after you reprimand them, very briefly,......1 minute for each year of age. Be sure to reinforce good behavior

  • Riley I’ve been doing this for years. I captain a 336gt vessel and still get nervous before passages. A lot of responsibility, lives in your hands. If you don’t get nervous before a voyage, you’re not on point. A good captain always thinks about every possible thing that can go wrong so that it doesn’t, or that you’re prepared. You’re definitely not the only one mate. Love what you guys are doing

  • I really enjoy your videos of your life aboard. I know only too well the misery of sea-sickness from many years spent at sea. Fortunately it didn't happen too often, but I have known new crew have to get off because they couldn't perform in bad weather. Also, unless you are in it and see the state of the sea and the height of the waves, you don't really appreciate just with a camera just how powerful a running sea is, especially if whipped hard by the wind. It's not frightening if you are in a serious boat, but it is concerning and can bite you very hard in a moment if you take it at all lightly. I've been on a 50 meter power yacht when it all went to sh1t. Amazing how its always in the pitch dark in the early hours. That's what you train for of course.

  • Remember with kids they understand long before they actually verbalize. He totally understands - the wonderful opportunity is to just realize that everything is learning for him - boundaries, consequences, joys, and things he doesn't like. Tone is the most powerful tool you have, just make sure to save the real intense tone for DANGER - too many parents overuse that tone and when it's really important kids don't listen.

Thank you so much, I watch with love and admiration of what you guys are doing, My sea sickness is so bad that I would not cope at all, so I tune in every week and imagine I’m along for the sail (minus the vomit 🤢). • Hi guys, as an early childhood educator I wanted to comment on your musings about telling Lenny "no" and if he understands. At his age developmentally I'd say he definitely understands, what is really important isn't just to tell him what he can't do, but what he can do. So if you are telling him not to do something, accompany it with what he CAN do and then it will be more clear for him and maybe more manageable for you! You can explain the "why" at this age, he might not understand fully yet, but you'll continue to explain and as he grows he will understand. Hit me up if you have any questions about child development or need ideas for behavior strategies! You are great parents :)

I tried to find a way to say yes instead, like instead of saying no you can't get on the chair, say yes of course you can but first daddy has to fix it. Instead of no you can't have sweets, yes of course you can after we have dinner, or something like that.

  • Yep Riley, always feel that apprehension departing for ocean crossing, especially if it was bad like back when I was 26yo, caught in 60 kn gale in Tasman Sea for 5 days in 45' seas, in a tiny 31' open deck cat, that was pretty character building, but as they say, sailors have short memories. BTW never encountered anything like those extreme conditions again (some 33 years ago, before weather routers, gps etc). Coming up the NSw coast from Yamba in 40kn a few weeks ago, I turned back (47' mono) because my much loved retriever was sick and whining..awww. I think anxiety, apprehension, fear, serve as necessary energy for thorough pre departure preparation. The antidote to anxiety is planning and prep. Also, I'm interested in seeing more of the Outremer performance and behaviour in 25+ kn ocean conditions, but don't listen to me.. best of experiences to you all

  • Being following from the start, this is my first comment. You guys rock, just keep doing what you do. Just a friendly piece of advice: if you say "no" to a child but later give in, the word has no real meaning to the child. It only takes a few times for this to happen. Decide what Lenny can't do and don't give in. You also need to consider that he is a 20 month old living on a very confined place. Just my 2c.

  • @ 2:30 Riley, Elayna - let me pass on the wisest words we heard from our 10 month old son's childcare worker. She was about to retire after spending 40 years watching parents and caring for their children. 'Eliminate the words "No," and "Don't," from your vocabulary when talking with your children, as far as possible. Instead, simply ask them to help you with something as a distraction and then thank them for doing so.' It works! Like magic. :-)

This is how toddlers learn about their surroundings and what is safe and unsafe. You can sometimes let him find for himself why you said no and sometimes you will need to intervene for his safety. You've got this. He is learning to respect others and what that looks like and he is getting lessons from some of the best. Not a worry!

He's just reaching the age where he also now knows he can ignore you / make his own choices and he's learning the consequences of such. It's a phase ALL kids go through and the best you can do is work to try and stay patient (easier said than done sometimes, I know!) and try positive reenforcement as often as you can! You're doing fantastic, he's a brilliant little boy!
